3 reasons to visit London this summer

A view of Wimbledon tennis courtsThis was was written for summer 2014 – we’ll be updating it for summer 2018 soon!

With summer officially due to begin on the 21st June, it is just around the corner – whether the sunshine plays by the rules is another question all together.

If you want to enjoy the summer months, then London is the place to be – there is so much going on every day!

With so many things to choose from, how do you make a decision on what to do and where to go?

Here we will give you some details on three things you could spend your time doing whilst in our beautiful capital city – so give this blog post a read whilst enjoying your afternoon tea with us here at DUKES Hotel.

1.  Wimbledon

It is that time of year again when everyone converges to SW19 to enjoy one of the biggest tennis tournaments of the year.

Starting on the 23rd June (with the final being held on the 6th July), take the time to enjoy your strawberry and Pimm’s.

Head to Henman Hill (or Murray Mound) to watch the games live on the big screen, or get yourself a ticket and be on centre court when the likes of Andy Murray and Rafa Nadal are in full flight.

You could even cap your day at Wimbledon with a visit to DUKES for one of our fabulous Martinis!

2.  Rooftop Film Club

Don’t be trapped indoors on these warm, vibrant, summer nights; take a nostalgic trip to the cinema instead.

The Rooftop Film Club will be screening a season of contemporary classics atop the Bussey Building in Peckham Rye, and these will run until September.

With a wide range of movies to choose from, there will definitely be something that suits your tastes.  They even take care of the surrounding noises (sweet packets, people talking or the sounds of vehicles, for example) – you will be provided with wireless headphones so you can enjoy the action whilst you’re wrapped up in your own little world – and to make the evening extra special start out with a bite to eat at DUKES.

3.  City of London Festival

This annual event returns on the 22nd June with a host of events set in some of the grandest locations in London.

There will be an orchestral concert in St Paul’s Cathedral, chamber recitals in the Livery Halls and Jazz gigs in the Gherkin, with breathtaking views of our city.

A special feature of this year’s festival is the Bowler Hat, a pop-up venue in the Paternoster Square presenting a variety of kid’s theatre, stand-up comedy, circus and cabaret.

These are just three of the reasons you should take the time to visit London this summer – you will probably know there are hundreds of other reasons as well.

And if you’re staying in London, then you will need somewhere with quintessential British charm and cosmopolitan luxury blended to create a timeless, hospitable atmosphere – and this is where we can be of great help to you.

An award-winning hotel, DUKES is the perfect hideaway in the heart of Mayfair.  Whatever your plans, we promise you an unforgettable, luxurious experience steeped in heritage.
